Kathleen Kenny

Beside your spidery legs
I feel calm,
as if you are befriending me.
Peaceful as a pond on a warm day
I hardly know what to think,
your eyes so amused,
bits of smoke strolling up
your half-closed lids.
I take your hand, squeeze myself
into your baggy sleeve
and sit, watching your shoulders shake,
your nose crease and crinkle
with the effort to control your mirth.
On my new dress drifts of smoke patrol,
work their way overhead
where the morning sun is red:
a shepherd’s warning.
