Cypriot Noon Waves
Morning shoots a white sun into the sky
Grey mushroom crabs rattle through a rock pool
Feasting on a dead salami-sized eel
Brought to boil by the ten-thirty ocean;
By noon, ocean bed scales’ of quiet waves
Scuttle over lemon cheesecake shored stones
Like sea-swimming white coconut spiders
Leaping in lightness, refracted by shadows;
Witness to the night moon as mouflon’s sleep
From Khirokitia, from Mother Earth
From Nicocles, from Ptolemies to Romans
A tapioca crescent falls to the sea.
