A Toast for Scottish Exiles


HERE’S A TOAST FOR SCOTTISH EXILES
IN LANDS SAE FAUR AWA
WHA LEFT THEIR HAMES, TAE MAK THEIR NAMES
THEIR FORTUNES SEEK AND A’
AND SHOULD PERCHANCE YER TRAVELS TAK YE TAE EACH CORNER OF THE EARTH
WHAT ERE BETIDE, AYE T HINK WI PRIDE ON THE LAND THAT GAVE YE BIRTH

THE MOUNTAINS WHAUR THE EAGLE SOARS
IN CEASELESS SEARCH OF PREY
THE VALLEY WHAUR THE WILD STAG ROARS
TAE GREET THE DAWN O’ DAY
THE LOCH’S WHAUR IN THE SALMON LIE
THE MEADOW’S LUSH AND GREEN
FOR BEAUTY AND SHEER GRANDEUR
IT’S LIKE HAS NE’ER BEEN SEEN

THEN DRINK A TOAST TAE SCOTLAND
ITS MOUNTAINS LOCHS AND GLENS
ITS CASTLES ON THE HILLSIDES
ITS WEE BIT BUT AND BENS
THE MOORS O’ PURPLE HEATHER
WHAUR GROUSE AND PHEASANT PLAY
WE HOPE AND YEARN THAT YOU’LL RETURN
AND SEE IT AGAIN SOME DAY
